The emotion curiosity, with
the most simple and cliché explanation, represents a thirst for knowledge…
Curiosity is a major driving force behind scientific research and other
disciplines of human study and arts.
Curiosity might be considered
as the basis of improvement,
progression, transformation and creativity. A consistent and stimulative motive
for learning, searching, improving, developing and transforming that realizes
the scientific and academic progressions. Curiosity, as a sense, can be encoded
in the genes and instincts of the human beings, for they are curious both by
academic means and also in their ordinary, daily lives. This curiosity has
always been a part of myths, legends, stories and history, from the
story of Adam and Eve, which is the myth of creation and abstractly of curiosity,
to the myth of Pandora; from the legend of Psyche and Eros, to Dr. Faust, who
even consented to give his soul for his insatiable hunger and curiosity for
infinite knowledge.
The content and scale of curiosity varies as
from wondering the lives of the others, to wondering the mysteries of the
universe, depending on the social, economical, academic, scientific and
artistic contexts.
Curiosity,
takes to new paths, opens new doors in life… Questioning, contemplating new
aspects, reproducing thoughts and opinions keep the mind sharp and vibrant;
brings on a critical aspect within, thus considered unsafe, uncomfortable and
uncanny for the “authority”. For the powers and clergy do not like the act of
questioning itself; being questioned and curiosity. Curiosity and questioning
brings awareness with, awareness creates individual and citizen consciousness
and this may lead to disobedience.
Many examples of this dislike have come forth
throughout the history during the formations of academic, scientific and social
changes and developments; moreover many have paid big prices.
Unfortunately,
we, as most of us have experienced in different times and ways, were educated
or tried to be educated as generations to accept and concede what is imposed on
us, instead of questioning the ideas, opinions, systems and structures.
In the recent years, the lack of curiosity is
easily observed among young people.
“The ability to provide knowledge is
getting easier every day so the time to saturate curiosity is getting shorter.
Does this increase or decrease curiosity? Does the enthusiasm to learn
disappear when easily provided? Was it the pain, difficulty and then the
victory to come to a point, a solution, knowledge itself that motivated people
through history to go for further knowledge and curiosity?
Talking to engineering, arts or philosophy
students about to graduate, and hearing that the only thing they think about is
to find a secure, steady job compulsorily instead of having the desire to practise
their own professions; their future worries instead of passion, ideals, dreams
or goals in life, is an egregious and tragic truth for today and future and for
academic and social progression.
To
conclude, in these modern times, not only in our country but also all around
the world, with the triggering of the capitalist system, the main concern of
curiosity is more likely to be on commercial goals and purposes than academic,
scientific and creative curiosity. The society is being de-memorized* and incuriousificated* day after day with
the education systems and manipulations by the mass media, and their curiosity
is systematically and intentionally oriented towards consumption frenzy and
upcoming products.
For this
reason, even in the most developed countries, in the last decades, the budgets for
the academic, scientific and intellectual researches are much less than the
budgets for “product development, advertisement, marketing means and costs” of
the markets.
It is inevitable not to be inspired and
not to take a lesson from the “passionate curious” Einstein, as he was my
motive at the beginning of my article; and as he will be at the end;
The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own
reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the
mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is
enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day.
Never lose a holy curiosity.

İnsanlar gün geçtikçe daha az merak eder hale
geldiler. Merakın giderilmesi için koşturulan zaman kısaldı, bulmak ulaşmak
kolaylaştı, bu iştahı kabartır mı yoksa köreltir mi? Heves, elde etmek
kolaylaştıkça tükenir mi? İnsanlık tarihi boyunca bilgiye ulaşmanın zorluğu ve
bunun zafer duygusu mu bir öte adım için merak ve motivasyonu arttırıyordu?
Gelişim, dönüşüm,
ilerlemenin ve yaratıcılığın esasını oluşturur merak. Sürekli öğrenmek,
araştırmak, ilerlemek, geliştirmek ve dönüştürmek güdüsüyle oluşur bilimsel ve
akademik ilerlemeler de. Merak belki duygu olarak insanın içgüdülerinde,
genlerinde kodlu olabilir, zira, gerek akademik gerekse günlük yaşamda insan
merak eden bir canlıdır. Bunu Adem ve Havva’nınkinden, Pandora’nın efsanesine, Psyche
ile Eros’unkinden, bilgi ve sonsuz merak yüzünden ruhunu bile satmaya razı olan
Dr. Faust’a kadar, merak ne efsanelerden, hikayelerden ne de tarihten eksik
olmamıştır. Merak kendisini mahallesindeki diğerlerinin hayatını merak
etmekten, evrenin oluşumunu merak etmeye kadar; bulunduğu sosyal, ekonomik,
akademik, bilimsel, sanatsal ortam gibi bağlamlarda, farklı ölçeklerde kendini
gösterir.
Merak yeni yollara
götürür insanı, yeni kapılar açar…sorgulamak, yeni bakış açıları, düşünceyi
türetmek, zihni canlı ve keskin tutar, eleştirel bakış açılarını beraberinde
getirir, ki bu yüzden otorite için tehlikeli gözükür. Zira iktidarlar ve din
odakları sorgulamayı-sorgulanmayı ve merakı sevmezler. Merak etmek, sorgulamak
farkındalığı getirir. Farkındalık bireyleşmeyi ve yurttaşlaşmayı, ve bu da
itaatsizliğe varabilir. Bu tarih boyunca bütün akademik, bilimsel, toplumsal
gelişmelerin oluşum süreçlerinde karşımıza çıkmış, hatta büyük bedeller
ödenerek yaşanmıştır.
Kendi toplumumuz
üzerinden örneklendirmek gerekirse, biz, birçoğumuzun farklı zamanlarda ve
şekillerde tecrübe ettiği üzere, fikir, düşünce sistemi ve yapıların sorgulanması
yerine bize empoze edileni kabullenmek üzerine eğitilmiş nesiller olarak
yetiştirildik, ya da yetiştirilmeye çalışıldık ne yazık ki. Günümüz
Türkiyesi’nde de kendi öğrencilerim vesilesiyle de her gün bu tip durumları
gözlemleyebiliyorum. Örneğin, mühendis olmak üzere olan öğrenciye “mesela ne
icat etmek isterdin?”, diye sorduğumda genel cevabın “okulu bitireyim de,
nerede iş bulabileceğim, bakalım” olması, felsefe ya da sanat mezunu
öğrencilerimin “en garantili gördükleri için” ve “mecburen” sanatçı ya da fikir
insanı olmak yerine, devlet okullarında öğretmen olmak istemeleri, hayal ve
ideallerini sorduğumdaysa verecek hiçbir yanıtlarının olmayışı, trajik bir
gerçekliğimizdir fikrimce.
Modern zamanlarda, sadece ülkemizde değil, tüm dünyada, kapitalist sistemin de
tetiklemesiyle, merakın odağı, bilimsel, akademik, yaratıcı meraktan, daha çok
ticari bir araç olarak merak’a dönüşmeye başlamıştır ne yazık ki. Bunun
örneklerini toplumun eğitim sistemleri ve medya aracılığıyla yapılan
manipulasyonlar sayesinde gün geçtikçe belleksizleştirilmesi, ve tüm merak ve
ilginin odağının “yeni çıkacak ürünler” ve tüketim çılgınlığı minvalinde
dönmesi olmuştur. Bu yüzdendir ki, günümüzde dünyanın en gelişmiş ülkelerinde
dahi bilimsel ya da düşünsel araştırmalara ayrılan bütçeler, “ürün
geliştirme”ye, reklama ve pazarlama şovlarına-mecralarına ayrılanlardan çok
daha düşüktür.
Yazıma başlarken de
olduğu gibi bitirirken de elbette tutkulu meraklı Einstein’dan feyz ve ders almak
kaçınılmazdır…
Önemli olan sorgulamayı bırakmamak. Merağın var olmak
için kendi nedeni vardır. Kimse bunu anlayamaz ancak bunun için de,
sonsuzluğun, hayatın, gerçekliğin inanılmaz yapısının gizlerini çözmeye
çalışarak, olabilir. ~ Albert Einstein
